Success in business isn’t always about having more knowledge—it’s about taking action, even when things aren’t perfect.

Don’t be too smart for your own good. That might sound strange, but here’s what I mean. Most of us spend so much time trying to add more—more knowledge, more information, more strategies—that we forget the most important part: action.

I was reminded of this lesson at something as simple as a neighborhood s’mores night. We were knocking on doors to invite neighbors, and a group of kids, all under seven, tagged along to help. The moment they got their fliers, they just ran off and started knocking on doors.

When someone answered, my four-year-old daughter and her friend just stood there smiling. They didn’t have a script. They didn’t even know what to say. But they showed up, and it worked.

"Knowledge matters, but action is what creates results."

That moment made me think about my own career. There have been times when I’ve had all the knowledge and training I needed, but I hesitated to act. Meanwhile, I’ve met people who seemed uncertain, maybe even unprepared, and then found out they were the ones on stage teaching because they’d closed more business than I could imagine.

What’s their secret? They don’t overthink. They take what they know and put it into action. They knock on the doors, literally and figuratively, before they’ve figured out the perfect script.

Yes, professionalism matters. You need to know your craft. But too often, we get stuck in “learning mode” and never step into “doing mode.”

So here’s the challenge: don’t be too smart for your own good. Stop waiting for the perfect plan, the perfect pitch, or the perfect moment. Just knock on the door. Make the call. Take the step. Action beats hesitation every time.
